Upright Bass Lessons — your questions
I play electric bass. How different is the upright?
Musically it is familiar, but physically it is a different instrument — no frets, a bigger stretch and a right hand that pulls a much larger string. We build proper double-bass technique from the start so you play in tune and without strain.
Do I need to learn to bow (arco)?
Not to begin. Most students start with pizzicato — plucking — and get a great sound quickly. We add bowing when you are ready, because it sharpens your intonation and opens up more repertoire.
Is the upright bass hard on the hands?
It is more physical than electric, which is exactly why technique matters. We teach relaxed posture and efficient hand use so you build strength safely and avoid the tension and injuries that come from forcing it.
Do I need to read music to learn upright bass?
Not to start, but reading is especially useful on the upright — it opens up jazz, classical and session work. We can build your reading alongside your technique at whatever pace suits you.
Can upright bass really be taught online?
